local community
We are involved in many outreach activities in our local community. Opportunities to serve range from:
- volunteering through non-profit organizations we support & partner with
- participating in local programs at Peace like PACEM & Adopt-A-Family
- being a Justice Ministry Network member for Peace with IMPACT
AIM
The primary purpose of AIM (Alliance for Interfaith Ministries) is to provide emergency assistance to families threatened with homelessness, loss of power or fuel, or other temporary financial emergencies.
Adopt-A-Family Program
Through money raised from a yard sale, we provide food, clothing and gifts at Christmas-time for several local families. Volunteers are needed to shop, wrap and deliver gifts in time for a joyous Christmas. You can also help with the Yard Sale and with Christmas gifts.
The Bridge Ministry
The Bridge Ministry's primary focus is preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to incarcerated men and helping them begin a new Christian life. You can help by praying, volunteering and financially supporting The Bridge Ministry.
Furniture Ministry
Peace works with Love, Inc (a local non-profit organization) to collect and distribute used furniture (in good condition) to area people in need.
Habitat for Humanity
We are currently in need of a coordinator to organize work dates and lunches for local Habitat for Humanity projects. In the past, we co-sponsored, with other area Lutheran churches, the construction of a house through Habitat for Humanity. We hope to be able to sponsor another house in the future.
IMPACT
IMPACT (Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by Congregations Together) is a newly formed organization consisting of representatives from various area churches whose purpose is to form partnerships in the area of social justice in the Charlottesville community.
On Our Own of Charlottesville
On Our Own provides mutual support, self-help, advocacy education and information and referral services to individuals who have experienced significant problems in their lives due to a mental illness.
PACEM (People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry)
PACEM is an interfaith collaboration of congregations in Charlottesville that helps people find shelter at night, especially during the cold winter months.
PACEM will be here again January 12 -25, 2008. We are looking forward to hosting the women this year. We will house a small number of women (15 or so) in our fellowship hall for two weeks. We will again be providing shelter, dinner, evening activities, snacks and breakfast each day. We need your help! Our serving teams include Food & Meal Serving, Evening Activities, Facility, Overnight Hosts & Collections.

Salvation Army Day Care Center
We are a member of IAHC (Interfaith Action for Homeless Children), which is a coalition of area churches dedicated to ensuring quality childcare services for homeless and poor families by providing volunteer and financial support of the Salvation Army Day Care Center. The Center needs volunteers to read to and interact positively with preschool-aged children. We also provide "wish list" items for the Center through our Easter Tree project.
Salvation Army Meal Ministry
The first Friday of every month, members of Peace Lutheran Church prepare and serve dinner at the Salvation Army Shelter in Charlottesville. Volunteers gather at the Transient Center Kitchen at 5pm to prepare the meal and are free to leave at 6:30pm when serving is done. Transient Center residents do the wash-up and clean-up. However, many of the volunteers stay to enjoy the meal and fellowship.
Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank
There is a basket in the narthex for collection of non-perishable food for the Food Bank year round. We have an annual Harvest Table in November to collect food for the holidays.
Women's Prison Christmas Ministry
Each year the Chaplain of the Fluvanna Correction Center for Women organizes and administers a Christmas gift program for the women inmates who now number about 1300. Each gift consists of a bag of toiletry items, Christmas (and all occasion) greeting cards and postage stamps.
