Spread the Love: Building Peace through service
IT WAS A GREAT EVENT!
1 in 6 people in Charlottesville - 1 in 7 children - are food insecure. Last Sunday at Building Peace we learned about some of the many needs in our community, then worked to Spread the Love through several service projects. We heard from the director of Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc., sorted and bagged onions for just a tiny part of their giveaway, and tried our hand at carrying 30 pounds of food 1/2 mile - 5 laps around the parking lot: that’s the amount of food given regularly and the distance from the food pantry to the nearest bus stop. We also made dog biscuits for the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, sorted screws and built small shelves for the The Habitat Store, made valentine cards to go in some of the food pantry bags this week, and assembled Blessing Bags of essentials for the homeless we encounter. See our facebook page for photos! Join us for our next Building Peace event on March 8: Peace in Community. |
A special January BUILDING PEACE:
A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day program It was a wonderful morning learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and how his legacy impacts us today. Over 60 guests of all ages enjoyed crafts and activities, a fabulous brunch, and a Peace Parade around our parking lot. The adults were blessed to hear Charlene Green's eye-opening presentation on the racial and ethnic history of Charlottesville. Many thanks to the Building Peace team and all who helped with this event, particularly the Middle School youth and mentors. |

BUILDING PEACE: Celebrating Peace in Many Traditions
December 8
What a great event! We hosted our largest group of attendees to date. This program offered a variety of experiences for everyone.
Advent Wreath Making, a Diwali festival, Tikkun Olam, the Jewish practice of "repairing the world", the Hindi Festival of Lights, Islamic traditional expressions of peace and traditions of the Seventh Day Adventist faith were all part of the day.
